Flower care guide
With the right care, a bouquet stays beautiful for days longer and an orchid for months. Here are the methods we use in our shop every day.
Bouquets and cut flowers
- When the bouquet arrives, unwrap it and cut 2–3 cm off the stems at an angle with a sharp knife. Scissors crush the stem and make it harder to drink.
- Wash the vase well — bacteria are a flower's worst enemy. Fill it with clean, room-temperature water.
- Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Leaves rotting in water make it cloudy.
- Change the water every two days and trim the stems a little each time. Add flower food if you have it.
- Keep the flowers away from direct sun, radiators and the fruit bowl. The ethylene gas that fruit gives off makes flowers wilt early.
Roses
- If a rose head droops, cut 2 cm off the stem under water and leave it in deep, cool water for a few hours — it usually recovers.
- You can gently remove slightly marked outer petals (guard petals); the rose will look cleaner.
Lilies
- As the flowers open, remove the orange pollen tips in the centre with a tissue. Pollen stains clothes and tables and shortens the flower's life.
- Closed buds open within a few days; pinch off faded flowers at the stem to make room for the others.
- Lilies are toxic to cats; if you have a cat, keep them well out of reach.
Orchids
- Place it somewhere bright but out of direct sun; a north- or east-facing windowsill is ideal.
- Once a week, dip the pot in room-temperature water for 10 minutes, then let it drain completely. No water should stay at the bottom of the pot.
- Silvery-grey roots need water; green roots have had enough. A clear pot makes this easy to see.
- After the flowers drop, cut the stem above the second node; in the right conditions it will bloom again.
Potted plants and succulents
- Don't water until the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry. For succulents and cacti, let the soil dry out completely.
- Water less in winter; plants grow more slowly and need less water.
- Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth once a month; dusty leaves can't absorb light well.
